Aromatherapy Basics

Take your spa to the next level by soothing your nose with lovely smells, which provide additional health benefits to what your hot tub can offer. Get to know the basics of aromatherapy by reading the following:

Edible doesn’t always mean safe
Cumin oil, which is safe to use in your food, can cause blisters if you put it on your skin.  Citrus oils that are safe in your food may be bad for your skin, especially if you go out into the sun. And the opposite is true, too. Eucalyptus or sage oil may soothe you if you rub it on your skin or breathe it in. But swallowing them could can cause a serious complication, like a seizure. Know the difference
Learn to compare apples to apples when shopping for oils. Anise, Lavender, Bay, Cedarwood, and Eucalyptus are examples of the common names of plants used to create essential oils. There, however, are different varieties of each of these plants. To differential these varieties, the botanical name (also referred to as the Latin name) is used to tell them apart. For instance, two different oils are referred to as “Bay essential oil,” yet they come from two different plants. The properties and aroma of each oil do differ as does the general cost between the two. It, therefore, is important to pay attention to the botanical name. In the case of Bay, the common botanical names for the two oils used in this example are Pimenta racemosa and Laurus nobilis. Source: AromaWeb

Avoid synthetic essential oils at all cost
Although they’re often less expensive, avoid synthetic versions, which also can be labeled “essential oils.” The increasing popularity of aromatherapy means there are many products available, but even some of those sold in health-food stores are made with synthetics. Aromatherapists worry about the effect of these oils’ synthetic ingredients, especially since many of them contain petroleum compounds and other potential toxins. Source: MotherEarthLiving
